This case involves exposure to fumes from an adhesive manufacturing plant produced by various forms of acid used in the manufacturing process. It is alleged that two pregnant women, from an office next to the manufacturing plant in Idaho, were exposed to the fumes, causing both to have miscarriages. The Plaintiffs’ alleged that there was a causal link between the exposure to the chemicals and the miscarriage. It was further claimed that the plant took inadequate measures to limit the exposure of residents to the harmful effects of fumes produced during the adhesive manufacturing process.

inline imageI am familiar with these chemicals. Some, though not all, are known to have adverse effects in fetal development. It is important to discern what the duration, frequency, and intensity of exposure was, as well as when in the pregnancy these exposures occurred. The concentration of the chemicals present in the products is also relevant. In addition, The environmental conditions are also key. Whether the exposure was outside, or in a confined space, including whether or not the space was properly ventilated or had any open windows. The medical history of the individual is also very relevant. In my clinical practice, I have evaluated many patients exposed to these chemicals. I have served as a medical expert in upwards of a 100 cases of exposure to environmental hazards of various kinds, including chemicals, asbestos, mold, and heavy metals. I am board certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Internal Medicine. I have a master’s degree in Occupational and Environmental Health, with training in Epidemiology and toxicology.
