Tattoo Removal Trademark Launches Legal Battle

An expert in the chemical PFD was needed in an intellectual property case where two companies alleged that the other was infringing on a trademarked tattoo removal technique. The disputed technique was the use of a patch infused with the solution perfluorodecalin, also known as PFD, known in the cosmetic industry for its ability to dissolve gases and oxygenate skin. According to the two companies, PFD patches reduced the dangerous ‘laser frost’ that accompanies most tattoo removal procedures, allowing for multiple laser passes in a single session to reduce procedural costs. However, the companies had to first prove that the technology was justifiably patented, and so the case required an expert in the properties of PFD and its unique usefulness for laser-removed tattoos.

Question(s) For Expert Witness

1. Please briefly describe your familiarity and experience working with PFD and related solutions.

2. Have you ever lectured or published on any topics relating to this case?

Expert Witness Response E-131117

inline imageI have studied the properties of perfluorodecalin to improve oxidation processes. Currently, I work for biotech companies and I am familiar with bio-compatible polymers and chemicals. I have used fluorocarbon liquids and organic hydrocarbons such as PFD and isopropyl alcohol to provide protective coating against humidity through a chemical reaction. By knowing the chemical properties of hydrocarbons, I have designed experiments to provide a protective barrier that enhances oxygen permeability. Though I have not done research specifically for laser tattoo removal application, I am familiar with the properties of PFD and would be able to explain its properties easily.
