This case involves a patent dispute between a major digital consumer audio device firm and a younger direct competitor. The patents in question concerned a speaker device automatically playing audio upon detecting an audio signal in a mechanical jack, the speaker’s ability to change its range of frequencies in accordance with its position, and the ability to change equalization in response to pairing and unpairing of speakers. An expert in audio electronic patents was sought to review the devices and patents in question.
Question(s) For Expert Witness
- 1. Are you able to knowledgeably discuss the above topics?
- 2. Please describe your background in reviewing patent cases.
Expert Witness Response E-055046
In my current position at a major audio device firm, I routinely review patent applications. I am comfortable addressing the ability of the device to play audio when an audio signal is detected in a mechanical jack that is always plugged in, and the speaker’s ability to change its range of frequencies in accordance with its position. I have experience with hard connected auto-turn-on circuits and knowledge of desirable changes in frequency response as a function of position. With additional context, I may also be able to address the changing equalization in response to pairing and unpairing of the speakers, as well as the volume control for multimedia speakers.
