Accuracy of K-9 Search Results Questioned

This case is a criminal case that involves a female who was pulled over for speeding. During the traffic stop, the trooper believed that the defendant was acting suspiciously, at which time he requested that she step out of the vehicle. At that time, another trooper who had arrived at the scene to provide backup used his k-9 to perform a free air sniff of the vehicle. Allegedly, the dog did not indicate the presence of contraband – however the troopers told the driver that they were going to search the car, at which point she was placed in handcuffs. During the search of the vehicle, the trooper discovered a sizable quantity of methamphetamine in the glove compartment, as well as multiple items of paraphernalia.

Expert Witness Response E-007699

inline imageI have been called a leader in the K-9 training industry by K-9 Cop magazine. I received formal training in 1995 and served as a MWD handler in the Air Force until 1999 receiving an honorable discharge. Accuracy level can vary greatly depend on the teams regular training schedule and last certification. Certification requirements can also vary from agency to agency. A poorly trained team is much less accurate than a well-trained team.
